With a mix of worldbeat, post punk, art punk and funk, the Talking Heads were one of the most famous bands to come out of the New York scene of the late ’70s. With the awkward David Byrne as frontman, they were also one of the unlikeliest bands to emerge out of CBGB. You can argue all you like that The Pogues weren’t new wave or post-punk (see the intro for justification) but their brand of Irish folk punk was fired up by the spirit of '77 and a direct reaction to the arty futurists who’re stereotypically thought of as new wave. Produced by the very new wave Elvis Costello, songs like The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn and Sally MacLennane are great examples of their fusion of punk fury and folk storytelling, while their versions of Dirty Old Town and And But at its best – the fidgeting ‘Spiderwebs’, the mega-hit ‘Don’t Speak’ and the deliciously pissed-off ‘Just A Girl’ – it paved the way for the band’s subsequent new wave Background 'New Wave' evolved from 'Punk' in the late '70s being less anti-social and more radio (and MTV) friendly, hitting it's high in '83 and faded around '87.It can be best described as mixing the energy of Punk with a bit of 'Glam', 'Pop', 'Art-Rock' & 'Dance' and relied heavily on synthesizers.

Blondie was influential in the punk/new wave scene in NYC in the late 1970s. Formed by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, the band had a fresh and vibrant musical vibe, and the group skyrocketed to fame, with eight Top 40 singles. Their catchy pop songs veered into genres like reggae, rap and disco.
